IRS Restores Non-Tax Status to Community Health Care Clinic

The Community Health Care Clinic in Normal has recovered its federal tax-exempt status. The agency that serves low-income people with no or inadequate health insurance lost its 501(c)(3) designation in May of last year.

Board chair Jamie Mathy said the Internal Revenue Service restored the not-for-profit’s standing retroactive to the date it was revoked, and all gifts made during that time remain tax deductible.

The clinic lost its status when it failed to file its federal 990 form for three years.

“I am proud that we never allowed this to disrupt the critical work we do and services we provide,” Mathy said. “Now more than ever, the need for our services is great and growing, and we are firmly committed to rising to that challenge and continuing to meet our patients’ needs, together with your support.”

Mathy said the board is grateful to the community that continued to support the clinic during the lapse and for the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation which stepped in to help as a tax-exempt workaround channel for donations during the interim.

The clinic is looking for a new executive director and that job posting will go public next week, Mathy said.
