The Barb Bush Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship was established by her colleagues to fund an annual scholarship to the outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences senior at both Normal Community High School and Normal Community West High School. Barb began teaching in 1984 in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Parkside Jr. High and Normal Community High school, and retired from Normal Community West High School in 2018.

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) encompasses the comprehensive body of skills, research, and knowledge that equips students make informed decisions about their well being, relationships, and resources to achieve an optimal quality of life. The field represents many areas, including human development, personal and family finance, housing and interior design, food science, nutrition, and wellness, textiles and apparel, and consumer issues.

Annually, the outstanding senior is selected by the FCS faculty at each high school (NCHS and Normal West) to receive this scholarship based on the following criteria:

  • Supporting the mission of FCS - Balancing Multiple Life Roles (embodies the purpose of FCS)
  • Pursuing an education/career in a Family and Consumer Sciences related field
  • Planning to use their skills in their post secondary career
  • Has shown proficiency in meeting FCS standards
  • Leader in the classroom
  • Passionate about FCS

Each year the selection committees at each school will be reported to Illinois Prairie Community Foundation upon notification of the award winners.
